This picture shows a big male elephant, who is not please with a camera being so close, standing amidst nasty thorn acacias and dried grasses. Those thorns are 1-2 inches long and needle sharp at the point. He is debating whether to charge and get us out of here. Elephants use their ears to display, signal or warn when alarmed or angry; they spread their ears, bringing them forward and fully extending them to warn you off or, as shown here, tuck the ears close in preparation to charge. |
